Where to eat, hang, and blow off steam once you get to Cal this fall

Welcome to Berkeley, Bears! Between orientation, buying textbooks, and figuring out which bus actually goes up the hill (the 65!), one of the best parts of your first semester is discovering the town outside the classroom. Berkeley is small, walkable, and packed with legendary food and things to do — most of it cheap enough to survive on a student budget. Here’s the shortlist locals wish someone had handed them freshman year.

Cheap Eats You’ll Rely On

These are the spots you’ll return to again and again, mostly because your wallet demands it and the food genuinely delivers.

• Cheese Board Pizza — A worker-owned co-op on Shattuck serving exactly one type of pizza a day. Around $3 a slice, live jazz some afternoons, and a line that moves fast. A rite of passage.
• Top Dog — A grab-a-grilled-sausage-at-midnight institution near campus. Fast, cheap, open late, and perfect after a study session that ran long.
• Gordo Taqueria — Burritos and tacos that fuel half the student body. Big, cheap, and reliably good — the default answer to ‘where should we eat?’
• Noodle Dynasty — Filling noodle bowls, dumplings, and rice dishes on Telegraph for roughly $10–$20 — restaurant-quality Chinese food at student prices.
• Imm Thai — Generous portions from family recipes, plus a $5 iced Thai tea that gets you through afternoon lectures.

Near Campus & Always Busy

Step onto Southside and Telegraph Ave and you’re surrounded by places that have fed Cal students for decades.

• Mezzo — A bright, beloved Telegraph cafe where the $13.50 half-salad, half-sandwich combo is one of the best deals around. Expect a line — it’s worth it.
• Tacos Sinaloa — A Michelin Bib Gourmand pick that’s still cheap and steps from the Unit 3 dorms. Reportedly a Steph Curry favorite, if that sways you.
• Gypsy’s Trattoria Italiana — Famous on Southside for portions so large they double as tomorrow’s lunch.
• Sliver Pizzeria — A rotating daily menu on Telegraph, so it’s never the same slice twice.
• GA·RA Café — Vietnamese coffee shop focused on thoughtfully sourced coffee and traditional Vietnamese brewing methods. Alongside coffee, the menu features Vietnamese classic dishes that reflect everyday food culture, served within a modern cafe experience rooted in community and creativity.

Good for a Hangout (or a Date)

When you want somewhere to linger with friends, impress a date, or take your parents when they visit for the weekend:

• Jupiter — House-brewed beers, wood-fired pizza, live music, and a two-level heated beer garden downtown. The go-to for warm evenings with a group.
• Cornerstone — Part restaurant, part taphouse, part live-music venue at Durant and Shattuck — 40+ taps, two stages, fire pits, and ping pong in the beer garden.
• Study Hall Rooftop Lounge — Skyline views, table games, and heaters for chilly nights. A fun pick for birthdays and group outings downtown.
• Triple Rock Brewery — One of the oldest brewpubs in the country, with a rooftop patio and trivia nights. Relaxed and easy.

Entertainment & Nights Out

Berkeley punches way above its size for live music, film, and culture — much of it right by campus.

• The Greek Theatre — The open-air Hearst Greek Theatre hosts big-name concerts all year. Seeing a show here with the Bay behind the stage is unforgettable.
• The UC Theatre — A restored downtown music hall (Taube Family Music Hall) with a steady lineup of touring acts.
• Ashkenaz — A world-music-and-dance community center that’s a Berkeley cultural icon — go for a dance night you won’t get anywhere else.
• Starry Plough Pub — Traditional Irish Ceili dancing every Monday, plus live music. Quirky, friendly, and free to watch.

Free & Nearly Free Fun

Some of the best of Berkeley costs nothing — a big deal when tuition already ate your savings.

• BAMPFA — UC Berkeley students get free admission to the Art Museum & Pacific Film Archive, including film screenings, tours, and lectures.
• Noon Concerts at Hertz Hall — Free live music from the Music Department on Wednesdays around midday. A perfect study break.
• Tilden Regional Park — Over 2,000 acres of trails just up in the hills, free to enter. Bring friends for a hike when the semester gets heavy.
• Indian Rock Park — Sunset views, easy trails, and beginner-friendly bouldering — a local favorite for winding down.
• Telegraph’s bookstores — Moe’s Books (don’t skip the poster section), Pegasus, and Mrs. Dalloway’s are free to wander for hours. Grab a Berkeley Public Library card too — it unlocks free books, movies, and Discover & Go passes to venues around the Bay.
