You’re moving to Berkeley! And what to pack tends to become an overthought, at the last minute — usually resulting in a car overflowing out the windows with things you didn’t need to bring.
Here’s the good news, and the single most useful thing a Berkeley local can tell you before move-in: if you’re moving into a Berkeley Group community, you’re walking into a fully furnished, amenity-loaded apartment. That changes the whole calculus. The smart move isn’t to bring more — it’s to bring less, and bring the right things.
So before you rent a trailer or overpack the trunk, here’s what actually earns a spot in your bags for August 14 — and what you can confidently leave at home.
First, know what’s already waiting for you
Every room comes furnished — bed frame, a twin mattress with a mattress cover, a sturdy desk and chair, a desk lamp, and a closet or wardrobe. The common areas are set up too, typically with couches, TVs, tables, and chairs. Kitchens come loaded with real appliances (yes, including air fryers and panini presses) plus the everyday kitchen staples. There’s fast fiber WiFi already wired in, on-site laundry, and weekly professional cleaning of the shared spaces. In short: the expensive, bulky, annoying-to-move stuff is handled. Your job is just to bring what makes the place feel like yours.
What to actually bring
Bedding — the one thing you can’t skip. The frame, mattress, and mattress cover are provided, but the cozy layer on top is on you. Pack twin sheets, a comforter, pillows, and a blanket. If you’re flying in or driving from far away, this is the item I’d buy locally once you land rather than haul across the state — but do it early in move-in week, because every incoming student hits the same Target the same weekend.
The things that make it yours. A furnished room can feel a little blank on day one, and that’s what personal touches are for: posters, framed photos, string lights, a small plant, a rug. It genuinely changes how the space feels after a long day of classes. Keep it to the small stuff — anything involving paint or nails, check with the office first.
A bathroom kit you can grab immediately. The classic move-in-day miss is realizing you have no towel the moment you want to shower. Pack towels, toiletries, and a shower caddy so your first morning in Berkeley goes smoothly and you’re out exploring instead of standing in a checkout line.
Clothes for Berkeley’s microclimate — and hangers. Your wardrobe is built in, so just bring the clothes. But pack for the reality of Berkeley weather, which is its own thing: foggy and in the mid-50s in the morning, then sunny and 80 by the time you’ve walked down from the hills to campus. Layers are non-negotiable. And bring hangers — it’s the single most-forgotten item every year.
Your tech (we’ve got the WiFi). Bring your laptop, chargers — pack a backup, you will lose one — a power strip, and headphones so you’re ready to lock in for syllabus week. A reusable water bottle earns its place in your bag too; you’ll carry it everywhere. Since fiber WiFi is already installed, you’re online the second you walk in.
What to leave behind (it’s already included)
Big furniture. This is the big one, especially if you’re coming from a place you furnished yourself. Don’t rent a U-Haul for a bed frame or a desk. The room is fully furnished — frame, mattress, desk, chair, lamp, and closet or wardrobe are all there. Bring the personal touches, not the heavy lifting.
Kitchen gear*. Put the air fryer down. The kitchens come with the appliances (air fryer and panini press included) plus the staples you need day to day. There’s no reason to pack pots, pans, or a collection of gadgets — save the trunk space and the moving-day back pain.
Common-area furniture. No couch strapped to the roof of the car, please. Lounges and shared spaces are already outfitted with couches, TVs, tables, and chairs — which, realistically, is where you’ll end up watching the game or ‘studying’ with your housemates. Save your space for the things that make your own room feel like home.
A WiFi router*. Leave it in the box. Fast fiber WiFi is built into the community, so there’s nothing to set up, no cords to untangle, and no service call to schedule. It just works when you arrive.
A car — and pets. Honestly, you don’t need a car here. Communities are steps from campus and walkable to nearly everything, with BART and AC Transit close by; parking in Berkeley is a headache and an expense you can skip. (If a car is truly a must, ask the office — limited on-site parking may be available at some communities for a fee.) And a heads-up that catches some students off guard: our communities are pet-free, so plan to leave the furry roommate with family.

One move-in-day habit that protects your deposit
A tip students consistently wish they’d known earlier: on day one, walk the unit with the property manager and photograph the existing condition before you unpack. It takes ten minutes and it’s the single best thing you can do to protect your deposit down the line. While you’re at it, confirm your key process and get familiar with your community’s quiet hours. Berkeley leases run twelve months, so it’s worth starting on the right foot.
